Paper slips:

  1. Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore and a keen naturalist, set up the very first Botanic Gardens in 1822 on Government Hill at Fort Canning. It was to introduce into cultivation economic crops.
  2. This first Garden closed.
  3. It was not until 30 years later that the present Singapore Botanic Gardens began in 1859, when the Agri Horticultural Society was granted 32 hectares of land in Tanglin by the colonial government
  4. The Agri Horticultural Society, however, ran out of funds and the colonial government took over the management of the Gardens.
  5. The first rubber seedlings came to the gardens from Kew in 1877.
  6. Another achievement was the pioneering of orchid hybridisation by Professor Eric Holttum, director of the Gardens. His techniques led to Singapore being one of the world's top centres of commercial orchid growing.
  7. During the Japanese occupation of Singapore, from 1942 to 1945 Hidezo Tanakadate, a professor of geology from Tohoku Imperial University, took over control of the Singapore Botanic Gardens and the Raffles Museum.
  8. After the war, the Gardens was handed back to the control of the British.
  9. Eventually the Gardens played an important role during the "greening Singapore" campaign and Garden City campaign during the early independence years.

Some information to take note of

Dear guides in NDP,

This will be the lyrics to the community song that we will be singing during the parade this year! Please familiarise yourself with the song and sing it loudly! (:

We Are Singapore
There was a time when people said
That Singapore won't make it, but we did
There was a time when troubles seemed too much
For us to take, but we did
We built a nation, strong and free, reaching out together
For peace and harmony

Chorus 1:
This is my country, this is my flag
This is my future, this is my life
This is my family, these are my friends
We are Singapore, Singaporeans

Singapore our homeland, it's here that we belong
All of us united, one people marching on
We've come so far together, our common destiny
Singapore forever, a nation strong and free

Repeat Chorus 1

(Singapore Pledge Sung)
We the citizens of Singapore
Pledge ourselves as one united people
Regardless of race, language or religion
To build a democratic society
Based on justice and equality
So as to achieve happiness
Prosperity and progress for our nation

Chorus 2:
We are Singapore, we are Singapore
We will stand together, hear the lion roar
We are Singapore, we are Singapore
We're a nation strong and free forever more

Repeat Chorus 2

This is my country, this is my flag (We are Singapore, we are Singapore)
This is my future, this is my life (We will stand together, hear the lion roar)
This is my family, these are my friends (We are Singapore, we are Singapore)
We are Singapore, Singaporeans
We are Singapore, Singaporeans

And this is some advice on how to polish your boots from HuiHui ma'am (CL 2013-2014).

1. Pour water onto the cover of the kiwi

2. Wet a cloth (that is smooth, eg. spectacles cloth) such that it just feel wet, not too much that it is dripping

3. Dip the cloth into the kiwi and take only a little kiwi, and not too much

4. Wrap the area of the cloth with the kiwi around the finger (any one that you prefer) and start polishing by going in circles

5. Polish the first layer until the swirly swirly thing is gone

6. Apply subsequent layer in the same manner until its deemed to be shiny, adding water as necessary

7. Make sure all parts of the boots is polished or it will result in cracks in the future. The foundation of a new boots generally takes longer to polish, so it may take around 1 hour per boots for it to be shiny, but since there is no cracks it would be easier to polish.
